Beginner Guide

Reps, Sets, and Time

Plain-English explanation of the numbers beginners see in workouts.

Core terms

  • A rep is one complete repetition of an exercise.
  • A set is a group of reps before a rest.
  • Time is used for holds, circuits, mobility flows, cardio, and recovery work.
  • Rest is part of the workout, not a mistake.

How to log clearly

  • Record the variation used, not just the exercise name.
  • Separate left and right side work when an exercise is unilateral.
  • Use notes for pain-free range, equipment, and form cues.

Safety note

Stop a timed set before form falls apart. Clean work is more useful than forced duration.
